The Midlands Region - Wheat, Wool and Rock Lobsters

Each of the coastal towns of this region emerged to support the local Rock Lobster industry. They now also cater for the wheat and wool farmers of the hinterland.

Low cost accommodation is available at the back packers hostel and the caravan parks at Cervantes, Jurien and Leeman. All have on-site vans and shops with all provisions.

The eerie rock formations that make up the Pinnacles Desert, the Stockyard Gully Caves and the picturesque (particularly in wildflower season from June to October) Leuseur National Park, as well as windsurfing, scuba diving, snorkelling and body surfing are the major attractions of this area.

BINDOON
Bindoon is located 80km north of Perth, and approximately 2,000 people live in a fifty mile radius. The area is very hilly and scenic, with sheep farming and grape growing being the primary industries. Tourists are encouraged to visit and stay at the local at New Norcia and enjoy the wines and hospitality. Bindoon is a citrus fruit growing area and is very hot in summer with mild winters, an area well worth visiting. Alan Burrett

BRUCE ROCK
Bruce Rock is on the alternative route from Perth to Kalgoorlie. This is the town famous for giving away blocks of land (conditions apply) It is a very neat, tidy town and has all the usual small town friendliness. The sporting complex is magnificent, an excellent swimming pool near the modern caravan park which also has small bungalows available. A truly delightful place to stop. Tommy Griffiths.

CERVANTIES
Located 2km West of the Pinnacles turn-off, the town of Cervantes has something for everyone:- The town is located 256kms north of Perth on the coast and is the Gateway to the World Famous Pinnacles. Cervantes is a small Crayfishing town with approxiametly 450 residents.

The Pinnacles are situated 17kms from Cervantes in the Nambung National Park. The best time to visit the Pinnacles is at sunset or sunrise. Cervantes has lovely beaches and is a great place to visit year round. Great fishing from boats, beaches, jetty or groyne, safe swimming areas protected by reefs, windsurfing, lazing or sightseeing.

Originally a fishing town providing good catches of Western Rock Lobster and a wide range of fish species, Cervantes has developed into a popular holiday destination that is well served with holiday units, a caravan park and motel. A regular daily coach service visits Nambung National Park and The Pinnacles.

GINGIN
The small village-like town of Gingin is one hour's drive north-east of Perth. It combines the charm of old casuarina stone buildings with the natural appeal of the Gingin Brook and Granville Park (good barbecue facilities). Attractions include wildflowers in Spring, Cheriton Estate (top quality restaurant, guesthouse and winery); www.cheriton.com.au, Colamber Bird Park (exquisite parrots), the Australian International Gravity Research Centre (http://www.gravity.uwa.edu.au) and on the coast at Guilderton, Moore River Tours. JURIEN BAY
Is the major town on this coastal stretch and features a modern marina which is home to the town’s crayfishing fleet.
Further north at Greenhead the almost full circle shaped Dynamite Bay is a major feature with its placid, protected waters, ideal for the not-so-proficient beachgoer.
Nearby, South Bay, with miles of beautiful white sand, is mecca for the surfing and windsurfing fraternity.

LANCELIN – A WINDSURFER’S PARADISE
The first major town north of Perth's Metropolitan area, Lancelin was founded on the crayfishing industry.
Accommodation available includes a hotel, two caravan parks, a backpackers lodge, along with several chalets and cottages.

The town is renowned world wide for its windsurfing conditions on its nearby waters. Many state and national titles have been conducted there. Windsurfers can be hired on the beach while professional coaching for beginners is available.
The back beach has consistently good surfing conditions all year round.

Sandboarding and Sandsledding in the ever-changing sand dunes is very popular as it does not matter which way the wind is blowing, the dunes that dominate the eastern side of town will provide top conditions.

Tours of the dunes are conducted by Sandgroper Safaris in a huge 4 x 4 bus while sand dune buggy hire is also available.
Scuba diving, snorkelling and deep sea fishing can be arranged while Moore River Cruises conduct a fun-filled half day cruise of the river just south of town. It includes sandboarding (into the river), fishing, sightseeing and an Aussie brunch.

Live entertainment at the tavern allows visitors to wind down from a hectic week’s activity or prepare for one coming up.
They also have a top A-La-Carte menu in the restaurant.
