Spearwood, Western Australia Send to friend | Bookmark | Print   Spearwood is an oceanfront suburb located 5 kilometres south of Fremantle. It was named by the colonial settlers after the native tea trees which were used for spears by the aboriginal Yugul tribe. Edeline Street is a well known location on which businesses and residential housing is situated. The houses on this street were constructed in the late 1800s, and the street was named in honor of Lady Edeline who was the wife of a famous politician Gerald Strickland. Spearwood consists 85% of bushland mostly containing tea trees, and the housing areas are frequently at risk from bushfires during the summer. Formerly, the area contained many market gardens. This oceanfront location is good for fishing, crabbing and for gazing across to Rottnest Island situated 20 kilometres offshore. Spearwood being so close to Fremantle (Perth’s port) also offers delightful old historic buildings to visit, restaurants, pubs and bars. There is also the Fremantle Gaol which was a prison from 1855 to 1991. Not to be missed is the Fremantle Arts Centre which offers a variety of artworks and was once an asylum for women. The Fremantle Maritime Museum is one of the world’s best maritime archaeological museums which display treasures from the many Dutch shipwrecks found along the Western Australian coast.
