Joondalup is a northern suburb located 26 kilometres from Perth, Western Australia. This regional centre in Perth is named after Lake Joondalup, it is a Noongar Aboriginal word meaning “place of whiteness or glistening” or “place of a creature that can only move backwards”.
To the north of Joondalup, is Burns Beach Road, to the west is the proposed Mitchell Freeway, to the south are Eddystone Drive and Lakeside Drive and to the east is Lake Joondalup.
Up until the 1960s, the majority of the land remained undeveloped. Most of Joondalup today, is made up of zoned commercial or residential areas and some small residential estates.
Lakeside shopping centre, the Joondalup library, a major police station and other commercial and government organizations can be found in the area. Entertainment outlets are also available eg. The Old Bailey, Dusk, and Grand Boulevard Tavern. The golf resort at Connolly which features 27 holes is an attraction.
Tiles hand painted by local school children are used to lined the city’s pavements.
There are a few parks including Central Park and Neil Hawkins Park which have parrots such as the ringneck, cockatoos and kangaroos.
An annual exhibition, The Joondalup Home and Lifestyle Expo is held in the Joondalup Arena every year in late March to early April.
