Located
in the South West region of Western Australia, Bridgetown is
approximately 270 kilometres (168 mi) south of Perth on the Blackwood
River, at the intersection of South Western Highway with Brockman
Highway leading to Nannup and Augusta.
Nestled amongst the hills on the banks of the Blackwood River, the town
has the rare combination of old world charm and modern facilities. Many
fine old building have been restored to their former glory, including
the post office, old goal, police quarters and "Bridgedale", the local
home having been built in 1862 by one of the first settlers in the
area, John Blechynden. It is the only town to be given ‘Historic Town’
status by the National Trust of Australia.
The town has a Jigsaw Gallery and Museum, which claims to host the only
jigsaw collection of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere.There is also
a primary school (1870) and a high school (1962), a district hospital,
telecentre, shire offices, roadhouse, agricultural showground, shopping
facilities and accommodation for travellers (hotel/motel, B&Bs,
caravan park), plus numerous picnic spots along the Blackwood River.
The town boasts art galleries, wineries, a cidery, cafes and
restaurants, plus a range of accommodation houses and is renowned for
its well tended gardens. Plus, the town hosts the annual Festival of
Country Gardens.
