Balingup is a town located in the South West of Western Australia, 241
kilometres (150 mi) south of the state capital Perth and 31 kilometres
(19 mi) southeast of the town of Donnybrook.
The town takes its name from a pool and brook of the same name which
flows through the town. The name was first recorded by a surveyor in
1850, and is said to be derived from the name of the Noongar warrior
Balingan.
The town is located on the South Western Highway. It originally had a
station located on the railway line, which was opened in 1898 the year
the town was gazetted.
The town is known for the scenic beauty of the surrounding hills and
annual festivals such as the Small Farm Field Day (late April) and the
balingup Medieval Carnivale (August). It is one of the few towns
through which the Bibbulmun Track passes.
Within the town there are village markets, art galleries and craft
centres to explore, plus wineries and vinyards, cafe's, fine
restaurants and bushwalks through the surrounding countryside.
